Sustainable Community and Regenerative Agriculture Project (SCRAP)

SCRAP Project_Boddie and King_2023

Our very own affiliate faculty members, Dr. Joshua King and Dr. Stephanie Boddie, contribute locally to a collaborative team known as the SCRAP collective (Sustainable Community and Regenerative Agriculture Project), which includes multiple nonprofit organizations and the City of Waco.

The SCRAP collective will grow a healthy, equitable food system in Waco to address issues of food waste, food insecurity, and climate resilience.  The collective is co-creating an ecosystem of urban gardens, farms, and educational programs to nurture community health, reduce landfill emissions, practice racial equity, and empower food sovereignty among Waco's diverse populations.

The SCRAP collective also recently received a generous $150,000 grant from the Cooper Foundation, and is awaiting decision on a $150,000 matching grant from the Funders Network.  This funding will allow the collective to pursue food justice in Waco in collaboration with Baylor University classes and the new Environmental Humanities Minor.

Over the next year, Dr. King will use funding from the grant for faculty workshops and equipment to create SCRAP-related learning and service opportunities for Environmental Humanities classes, highlighting Baylor's Community Garden.
